The Adrian Cheng-helmed museum-retail complex has long nestled nooks, crannies, corners and even a faceted Gold Ball domain that hold court to over 40 world-class contemporary art pieces and installations. Beginning mid-May, K11 MUSEA’s month-long Art Karnival adds to the curated roster with a programme of exhibitions, tours and workshops dedicated to headlining works from international artists. Here’s a handy itinerary of Art Karnival highlights if you’re feeling a touch overwhelmed.

Isa Genzhen’s Rose II
When: From end of May
Soaring to heights of 8.5 metres, Isa Genzhen’s Rose II stands much, much larger than life against the formidable fortress that is K11 MUSEA; an almost surreal addition abloom amidst Hong Kong’s iconic harbour-front skyline. Long considered one of Germany’s most influential female contemporary artists, Genzhen is well known for experimenting with materials, techniques and ways of installation within the realm of architecture and urban space. Rose II is no exception; rendered from steel, aluminium and lacquer, this extraordinary sculpture is a pantheon of man-made, inorganic materials so different from the born-in-nature temperament of its subject material. This marks the first time Rose II has been showcased in Asia.

Rose’s Allure
When: 20 May – 27 June
A classical Grecian profile — fragmented, gargantuan and a touch unkempt at the nostrils — sits in repose across from K11 MUSEA’s Gentle Monster outpost. Give him a trim by plucking from a nostril upon spending HK$1,500 or more; you’ll find a rosy surprise at the other end.

Xu Zhen’s In Just a Blink of an Eye
When: 18 – 23 May
Contemporary Chinese artist Xu Zhen’s In Just a Blink of an Eye — supported by the K11 Art Foundation — is an hours-long installation of a human figure performing the act of falling through means invisible to the visible eye. This suspension of a motion that would otherwise occur in the space of mere seconds explores notions of temporality and space; the passage of time and how reality is constructed through our very subjective gazes.

Calligraphy Rhapsody – Retrospective Exhibition of Georges Mathieu
When: 19 May – 4 July
Co-presented by K11 Art Foundation and the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau and curated by Catherine Kwai, Calligraphy Rhapsody – Retrospective Exhibition of Georges Mathieu is a centenary celebration of selections from the French oil painter’s oeuvre, with most painted between the decades of 1950’s to 1990’s. The father of the Lyrical Abstraction movement, Mathieu’s earlier works are gestural and calligraphic, while his ‘cosmic shift’ in the mid-1980’s explode into abstraction and poetry.

Gufram and Snarkitecture’s Broken Series Pink Edition
When: 14 May – 27 June
A worldwide-first debut at K11 MUSEA, Gufram and New York design practice Snarkitecture’s ‘Broken Series Pink Edition’ — consisting of the Broken Mirror, the Broken Square Mirror and the Broken Bench — is rendered in baby-pink polyurethane masquerading as concrete; a cheeky play on ‘soft/not soft’ contrasts.

Gufram’s Guframini® Pink Edition
When: 14 May – 27 June
Exclusive to K11 MUSEA, Gufram’s Guframini® Pink Edition shrinks down the Italian artisanal entity’s Gufram’s iconic Bocca® sofa (HK$2,690), a Cactus® coat hanger (HK$2,890) and a Pratone® chaise lounge (HK$2,790) into 1:8-scale Guframini® miniatures, limited to 333-numbered pieces per design. Each Guframini® creation is made from polyurethane foam injected into a painted mould.
